What is 5 Axis Vertical Machining Center
5-axis machining refers to a machine's ability to move a tool or a part in five different axes simultaneously. Basic machining operates on three primary axes, X,Y, and Z; however, a 5-axis CNC machining tool can rotate two additional axes, A and B, which give the cutting tool a multidirectional approach.
Minimized setup
A 5-axis machine allows you to work on every surface, apart from the clamping area and the bottom. When working on contoured parts or parts that require machining on several faces, you need several setups of the 3-axis machine to achieve the complex geometry through manual rotating; 5-axis technology completes the job in a single setup, reducing the number of setups and helping you save time.
Complex designs
The additional movement available with 5-axis machining allows you to achieve complex shapes and designs. With the 5-axis machine, you have access to machining angles and arcs that were previously achievable only through multiple setups and a myriad of special fixtures. Ultimately, 5-axis machining eliminates the need to create complex fixtures as you can hold the part once and rotate in a single process to achieve the desired geometry.
Rotational accuracy
Every time you remove a part from a machine, you lose the precise alignment that allows you to achieve superior quality. Unlike 3-axis machining, 5-axis machining improves accuracy by allowing you to complete a task in a single set up, and create multiple and complex shapes without losing the precision required to maintain quality.
Faster material removal
In 5-axis machining, the cutting tool remains tangential to the cutting surface, allowing for low cycle times, which helps save costs as you remove more material each time the tool passes.
Better surface finishes
The fourth and fifth axes help you orient and bring the part closer to the cutting tool, allowing you to use a shorter cutting tool, which is less susceptible to vibration at extremely high cutting speeds, helping you achieve a better surface finish. It also saves you time; when using a 3 axis machine, you must make use of very small cuts to achieve a good surface finish, which leads to longer lead times.
Application of 5 Axis Vertical Machining Center
Aerospace industry
One of the main reasons why 5-axis CNC machines are ideal for the aerospace industry is the limited amount of re-fixturing required. Due to the complexity of a typical aerospace component, 3 or 4 axis CNC machines will require multiple re-fixturing steps and re-orientations to allow for the cutting head to machine difficult to reach areas. Aerospace components also have organic shapes with compound curves which are an ideal application for 5-axis machines. An example of a compound curve can be found in turbine blades which are cast and typically machined by a 5-axis machining centre to achieve the final desired shape and surface finish.
Automotive industry
The automotive industry is characterised by high production volume with a critical requirement for consistency. From the first to the thousandth, each component needs to fit within a specific tolerance every time. Most components in the transport industry are made using low-cost high-volume processes like stamping, injection moulding and casting. However, these cheap and fast techniques require advanced and highly accurate tooling, which is an ideal application for 5-axis machining.
Medical industry
Like the aerospace industry the medical industry has an extremely stringent requirement for quality. Certain medical parts may have a direct and immediate effect on a person's health or survival rate if there are detrimental quality issues. Some medical components have organic shapes machined out of exotic materials to enable them to be implanted into a patient. 5-axis CNCs can both machine these types of materials and handle the organic shapes of such implants. Apart from implants there is also a need for 5-axis on other medical-related applications like medical impellers and CT scanner components.

The energy industry is the backbone of all other industries. It is vast and encompasses many different technologies. From coal-fired power stations to concentrated solar power systems and even more exotic technologies like fusion, there is a never-ending need for advanced components that push the limits of engineering, materials science and manufacturing. Due to these intensive requirements there is a need for machining systems that can reliably produce advanced components and this is where 5-axis machinery comes into its own. One example of the types of complex components that are emerging in the industry is the plasma containment chamber in a stellarator fusion device. The shapes in this machine are so organic and complex that there is simply no other way to manufacture them apart from with a 5-axis machine.

General CNC machines take up the bulk of the work in this industry with 5-axis machines serving a supporting role in tool making, mould making and specialised applications.As technology advances alongside machine learning and AI, there will be more optimisation occurring on existing systems and technologies. Although advancements in additive technology are opening manufacturing up to more complex shapes, production processes are still relatively slow. At least for now, nothing can match the pace and flexibility of a 5-axis machining solution.

Understanding the five axes in 5-axis machining is key to appreciating its capabilities. Each axis represents a unique direction in which the cutting tool or workpiece can move, allowing for intricate designs and high precision in manufacturing. Let's break down the significance of each axis:
X-Axis: This is the horizontal movement across the length of the machine bed. It's the base movement for most CNC machines, including the 5-axis variants.
Y-Axis: Working in conjunction with the X-axis, the Y-axis represents the horizontal movement perpendicular to the X-axis. It expands the machining capabilities from a linear to a planar field.
Z-Axis: The vertical movement, allowing the cutting tool to move up and down. This axis is crucial for depth control in machining processes.
A-Axis: This axis allows for rotation around the X-axis. It's pivotal for reaching angles and sides of the workpiece that are otherwise inaccessible with just X, Y, and Z movements.
B-Axis: Similar to the A-axis, the B-axis provides rotation but around the Y-axis. This additional rotational movement further enhances the machine's ability to create complex geometries.
Most machinists are familiar with a manual, 3-axis vertical milling machine. The three linear axes dictate how the parts of the machine move:
X-axis: The operator can move the worktable to the left or right.
Y-axis: The table can move forward or backward.
Z-axis: The operator can move the head of the cutting tool up or down to adjust the depth of the cut.
A 3-axis CNC router uses the same movements along those three axes. However, instead of manually adjusting the machine, a CNC router is programmed using computer-assisted design or manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software. The software directs the machine to follow a tool path according to specific coordinates, moving along the X, Y, and Z axes simultaneously. CNC routers are popular in the woodworking industry, where they're used to make three-dimensional signage, cabinets, furniture, and more.
In addition to moving along the X, Y, and Z axes, a 5-axis machine also has two rotary axes, known as the A-axis and B-axis. All five axes can engage at the same time to perform complex cutting movements. Instead of a fixed tool head, the 4th and 5th axis means the cutting tool can approach a workpiece from any direction. With a single setup, an operator can machine multiple sides of a part. Note that some machines also have a C-axis that provides rotation around the Z-axis.
These specialty machines with five axes have the freedom of motion to produce very complex shapes. For example, if you wanted to create a partial cavity or an overhang, you would need to reset the part midway through the process on a standard 3-axis horizontal machining center. With the 5-axis CNC, you simply program in the instructions and you don't have to reposition the material or the tool. The result is shorter setup times, the ability to produce more complicated parts, and easier repeatability.

Before jumping on a 5-axis CNC mill, you must get the right information. Getting the right information involves analyzing design data for accuracy and correctness. Verifying the design process before translating the CAD design into its CAM equivalent is also important.
